Issues to note when using cables
Correct use of cables not only improves the safety of the sailors and the mates, but also extends the service life of the cables.
① Before use, the first mate (bow) or second mate (transfer) carefully checks the integrity of the cables. If there is excessive wear or a large number of broken ends in a certain part of the cables, replace the cables in time. If there is no time to replace them, try not to let the cables bear too much tension during use to prevent sudden breakage.
② The cableman must be familiar with the types and characteristics of the cables he is going to operate, and operate them in a targeted manner. For example, artificial fiber cables will not make any sound before breaking, and there are no signs that can be seen intuitively. If you are using this type of cable, then when the cable is under force, you must have a good grasp of the maximum tension that the cable can withstand to prevent sudden breakage.
③ The sailors and mates who carry the mooring rope must wear safety helmets, gloves, safety shoes, and work clothes. It is absolutely not allowed to "wear slippers, big shorts, and carry the mooring rope with bare hands". Many mates and sailors of small boats do not pay attention to their own protection. Once an accident occurs, the mooring rope breaks, and the huge mooring rope breaking force acts on the head of the broken mooring rope at a very fast speed, threatening their own life safety.
④ The head (bow) and the second mate (stern) should pay attention to the technique when operating the mooring rope. Practice has proved that the mooring rope breaks mainly due to continuous impact loads. For this reason, the operators of the mooring rope must be skilled in operation, minimize the impact load on the mooring rope, and reduce the mooring rope breakage caused by this reason.
⑤ The mooring rope operator must be familiar with the gestures and sign language involved in the mooring rope operation process, such as: release, retract, stop, brake, etc.
⑥ Position requirements: the position of the mooring rope operator and the outboard mooring rope operation area; all personnel are not allowed to stand in the rope ring; all personnel are not allowed to stand in the "rebound zone" of the mooring rope.
To sum up the ship's cable operation in one sentence, crew members with good seamanship, in a safe working environment, choose safe cables, use safe mechanical equipment, and apply safe operating procedures to tie the ship safely to the dock.
